The Park and the City: 2nd Festival at the Lavrion Technological and Cultural Park, October 11 & 12, 2025 Main Theme: Presentation of the project “Decontamination and Restoration of the ‘Konofagos’ Building”

The Administration invites all colleagues and collaborators of the Foundation to the 2nd Festival organized by the Lavrion Technological and Cultural Park (LTCP), titled “The Park and the City”, on October 11 and 12.

At the core of the festival is the presentation of the project “DECONTAMINATION–RESTORATION OF THE ‘KONOFAGOS’ BUILDING”, located within the LTCP. This project marks the completion of the remediation of the “Konofagos” flue gas filter building and the elimination of a long-standing yet immediate and serious risk to public health and environmental safety in the area.
The project—extremely complex and unique on a global scale—required the implementation of innovative, internationally recognized technologies, as well as significant efforts to secure the necessary funding.
At the same time, the building was structurally reinforced and restored, joining the series of rehabilitated historic buildings of the former French Mining Company of Lavrion (GEML), which together form a preserved ensemble of great historical significance for Greece. The building is also closely linked to the National Technical University of Athens (NTUA), as its name suggests.

It should be noted that the project was carried out under the European Operational Program “Competitiveness, Entrepreneurship and Innovation” (EPAnEK) 2014–2020, part of the NSRF 2014–2020 framework.

In parallel, two outstanding artistic events related to the material and intangible identity of the Lavreotiki region will complete the festival:
– The dance performance “Underthumbs” by choreographers K. Gevetzi and M. Trikka, inspired by miners around the world and by all those who live and work underground; and
– The avant-première of Nikos Kornilios’ film “The Sea in Winter”, filmed entirely in the Lavreotiki area, with large parts shot at the LTCP.

The aim of this year’s festival is to celebrate the ever-growing bonds with the city of Lavrio and to reaffirm our steadfast commitment to supporting the technological development and cultural progress of the local community—which, in turn, has believed in and supported the Park.
