The National Technical University of Athens leads the way in Sustainable Development: Actions, innovation, and environmental responsibility sustainability.ntua.gr

The National Technical University of Athens (NTUA) places sustainability at the heart of its operations and is shaping a comprehensive strategy that establishes it as a model of environmental responsibility. On the platform “National Technical University of Athens – Sustainable Development”, available at https://sustainability.ntua.gr/, the initiatives already underway are presented — from energy saving and the promotion of the circular economy to public awareness and education activities.

The Sustainable Development Strategy represents the first integrated framework that unifies and highlights the actions of the past ten years. It was created through an initiative of the NTUA Administration, with the active collaboration of professors from NTUA Schools and members of the European University Alliance EULiST (Prof. Ir. Koronaki and El. Alexandrou), students and researchers, with the special contribution of Dr. T. Roumpedakis.

At the core of this initiative are energy-saving interventions through new air-conditioning systems, efficient lighting, and infrastructure that reduces energy consumption, as well as actions promoting renewable energy sources, recycling, environmental improvements, and public awareness.

Setting an initial goal of reducing energy consumption by 20% by 2030 and achieving climate neutrality by 2050, NTUA is creating the Living Lab — a unique space for experimentation and collaboration where students, researchers, and social partners develop applications with direct value for society and the market.

Special emphasis is also placed on the recording of CO₂ emissions, a process that goes beyond the energy consumed in buildings and includes the daily commuting of the university community. This provides a clear picture of NTUA’s real environmental footprint and paves the way for targeted measures toward climate neutrality and sustainability.

Through open activities for the public and student competitions that engage the younger generation, NTUA bridges education with practice and brings sustainability to the center of academic life. The “NTUA – Sustainable Development” platform demonstrates how university knowledge can contribute to a society that acts responsibly in the face of environmental challenges.
