Symposium and Coordination Meeting of PRODIM Project in Heraklion, Crete

The 3rd Coordination Meeting of the PRODIM project took place on 12-13 June 2007 at Atlantis hotel in Heraklion, Crete, Greece.

PRODIM stands for PROactive management of water systems to face Drought and water scarcity in Islands and coastal areas of the Mediterranean. Participants from the eleven partners of the project from four Mediterranean countries (Greece, Italy, Cyprus, Malta) were gathered to discuss and disseminate the results of their research and formulate the tasks of the next period.

Key presentations were:

  1. Drought Preparedness Plan (Centre for the Assessment of Natural Hazards and Proactive planning);
  2. Strategic Management of Drought in Italy (University of Catania);
  3. Climate Change Scenarios (University of Thessaly);
  4. Drought Simulation in Esaro catchment (University of Calabria);
  5. Drought Management in Kouris catchment and Akrotiri aquifer (Meteorological Service of Cyprus);
  6. Water supply system of Heraklion and results of a questionnaire on public opinion on drought management measures (Eastern Crete Development Organisation).

Approximately 70 participants were present representing the main stakeholders of Water Management Organisations (universities, research institutions and public development organisations). Presentations and discussions were given both in Greek and English (simultaneous translation) and the symposium ended with a press conference to the local media.
