Development of an Axios-Vardar River Basin Management Plan
The Axios-Vardar River constitutes
the most significant source of water for the greater region of
Central Macedonia (Greece) and the Former Yugoslav Republic of
Macedonia (FYROM). Greece and FYROM share this transboundary
river; however, a common river basin’s action plan has not yet
been inducted by the two neighbouring countries.
This project provides information and standards for the
formation of a mutual Axios-Vardar river basin’s action plan
under the EC Water Framework Directive 2000/60.
The present report focuses on the strategy for coordination
in the abovementioned international river basin.
The project was conducted under contract to the non-profit
organization Aristotelis, Greece, a founding organisation of the
Euroregion Belasica.

Mediterranean
Islands Sustainability ISO-BASED Action
Plan “2006-2015”
MED-
ISOLAE delivers ISO: 9001 procedures, the structure of an island SDI (Spatial Database Infrastructure), a pilot
and a series of dissemination sessions assisting Mediterranean
islands to implementing their step-by-step ISO based sustainable
management plans for the islands development and environment
sectors in the period 2006-2016. Promoting a sounder & more sustainable evolution (environmental, social,
economic & administrative) for Med- Islands is of paramount
importance to the EU. The planning and maintenance of
sustainability is not an easy task, and there are no true
methodologies on how to achieve sustainability and its related
indicators for the sustainability pillars, themes, sub-themes
and parameters.
The state-of-approach is to keep the indicators related to the
sustainability matrix in balance via standardized procedures and
methods, aiming at safeguarding the balance. Such procedures
must have standardized ISO based rationale. In addition, any ISO
implementation has to be supported by data and a spatial
data infrastructure.

ECOlogical NETwork for the promotion of convergent
conservation
strategies in coastal hAbitats of Community significance
Coastal
zones in the Mediterranean region display a high diversity
of habitats, such as sandy beaches, salt marshes, coastal
plains. Despite the designation of many of these habitats in
the Natura 2000 network their long-term conservation
effectiveness is questioned.
This is because coastal zones are influenced by inland
processes, often at the scale of the river catchment and
thus subject to an increased degree of threat. Therefore
biodiversity conservation success in those habitats depends
on understanding landscape processes of both natural and
socio-economic origin.Recent policy developments, such as
Integrated Coastal Zone Management (ICZM), account for
changes at a broader spatial scale. However, in practice
there is no real integration of ideas between ICZM and biodiversity
conservation. Therefore there is a need to establish and
adopt common tools and methodologies in ARCHIMED region to assess landscape scale processes
and deliver guidelines for conservation management of
coastal habitats in the long term.
Objectives:
- Establish a network of
research institutes and local authorities involved in
coastal habitats management.
- Establish a common
knowledge base on Environmental Impact Assessment and
Decision Support for coastal habitats.
- Training of researchers
and professionals on best practices for coastal habitats
management.
- Support the planning
process for Natura 2000 management.
- Establish a portal
service for the post-project period that will provide
information to stakeholders and the public.
