    The Center for Appalachian Studies coordinates the following degree options:
    - B.A. degree in Interdisciplinary Studies with a concentration in Appalachian Studies.
    - Undergraduate minor in Appalachian Studies.
    - Master of Arts degree in Appalachian Studies.
    The Master of Arts Degree in Appalachian Studies offers two interdisciplinary concentrations:
    A. The Appalachian Culture Area concentration focuses on scholarship and research in the social sciences, humanities, and fine and applied arts, seeking to deepen understanding of the Appalachian socio-cultural and historical experience.
    B. The Sustainable Development concentration is based on applied research and interdisciplinary course work spanning the social and natural sciences as well as the humanities. It provides a foundation for those students who seek to develop the means for meeting the legitimate needs of present generations without compromising the ability of future generations to meet their needs. For students interested in Appalachian and other highland and rural peoples, as well as other peoples threatened by the results of unsustainable practices and patterns, this course of study provides the background in the search for sustainable solutions.

    Το Διεπιστημονικό Πρόγραμμα Μεταπτυχιακών Σπουδών του Ε.Μ.Πολυτεχνείου «Περιβάλλον και Ανάπτυξη», με αντικείμενο «Περιβάλλον και Ανάπτυξη των Ορεινών Περιοχών» (2η κατεύθυνση) απευθύνεται σε εκείνους τους υποψήφιους μεταπτυχιακούς φοιτητές οι οποίοι επιθυμούν μετά την απόκτηση αυτού του Μεταπτυχιακού Διπλώματος, να εργαστούν στις ορεινές περιοχές της χώρας μας, συμβάλλοντας ουσιαστικά στην αξιοβίωτη ολοκληρωμένη τους ανάπτυξη και στο ξαναζωντάνεμα της Ελληνικής υπαίθρου. Οι εργασίες του Δ.Π.Μ.Σ. πραγματοποιούνται στις εγκαταστάσεις του Ε.Μ.Π. στο Μέτσοβο (ΜΕ.Κ.Δ.Ε. του Ε.Μ.Π.).

    The studies that are undertaken deal with ecological factors in mountain environments, more specifically in the Alps, and these studies can be grouped under one main theme "sustainable development in mountain areas".

  4. International Programme on Research and Training on Sustainable Development (IPROMO)

    The IPROMO programme was conceived and organized by the Mountain Partnership Secretariat at Food and Agriculture Organization of the United Nations (FAO), the UNESCO, within the framework of the UN Decade of Education for Sustainable Development, and the University of Turin (IT). The IPROMO programme includes the creation of the "International Post-Graduate School for Mountains" located at the Istituto Angelo Mosso at Col d'Olen (Monte Rosa), Italy. The school, located in the middle of the Monte Rosa Massif (between the Piedmont and Valle d'Aosta regions), has an important historical value and a strong potential as a training site. The programme includes courses in the fields of natural sciences, forestry, socio-economics. The final objective is the training of students, researchers, technicians for the management of mountain areas, characterised by considerable ecological, social, economical complexity. Moreover, the aim is to provide scientific knowledge and to enhance the ability of participants to assess potential ecological and social impacts of different management policies.

    “MSc in Managing Sustainable Mountain Development”: This modular course is designed to meet the needs of practitioners working in a wide range of development contexts, not just in the UK. Participants will themselves become major providers of knowledge as they systematically and critically reflect on their own professional practice in relevant fields. As this is a vital ingredient of the course, tutors will need to be both flexible and willing to adjust their input to the particular circumstances of the individuals and groups they work with.

    The Mountain Institute’s Mountain Learning Programs bring adventure, conservation, and education together in a rigorous and challenging environment. The wide array of courses combine group process skills and leadership development with environmental education and adventure. Mountain Learning provides respected, field-based programs to individuals, school groups, universities, businesses, charities, and a variety of other organizations.

  7. New College of California Semester Abroad in Nepal

    “Himalayan Interdisciplinary Area Studies”: The Semester Abroad Program consists of a combination of supervised an independent study courses and field experiences. This survey course provides students with a fundamental knowledge of Himalayan geography, history, cultures, politics, religions, and peoples. Students survey the ancient and modern history of the region, the political, economic, and cultural issues emerging from these historical processes, and their expression in current domestic and global problems, as well as the contemporary debate over proposed solutions. This course consists of readings, lectures, discussions, informational meetings, and independent study. The academic portion of the class takes place in Kathmandu during the urban phase of the semester. During the rural phase, students complete a community profile which allows them to do an in depth study of the practices and day to day life of the rural host family and community. This provides the student an opportunity to integrate theory and real life experience.

    “Heritage Interpreter’s Course: The What and Why of Mountains”. The Banff Centre is Canada's only post-secondary learning centre dedicated to the arts, leadership development and mountain culture.

  9. The Mountain Horticultural Crops Research and Extension Center, North Carolina.

    It is a diverse center with many programs that benefit the citizens of North Carolina. The center enjoys a reputation and history of conducting applied research while developing and implementing highly effective extension programs. Over 40 faculty and staff, from the North Carolina State University College of Agriculture and Life Sciences, and the College of Natural Resources, conduct research and extension programs for the departments of Entomology, Forestry, Horticulture, Plant Pathology, Soil Science, and Zoology. The Center also houses the administrative offices for the North Carolina Cooperative Extension Service West and Southwest Districts.

  10. The Mountain Research Station, Colorado

This courses is ideal as continuous professional development for people currently working in the management of development in mountain areas, or for those seeking such employment.

  15. White Mountain Research Station, University of California.

    - The University of California’s White Mountain Research Station (WMRS) offers unique laboratory facilities spanning a 10,000 foot altitude transect and providing access to the Eastern Sierra and Western Great Basin environments. WMRS encourages multidisciplinary studies spanning the full breadth of biological, physical and social sciences.
    - Student Immersion Program in Education and Research: This program supports students from a wide range of ethnic and socioeconomic backgrounds - women and minorities are especially encouraged to apply.
